Ohio Turnpike reaches electric vehicle charging milestone

Last month, the total number of electric vehicles charged on the 241-mile Ohio Turnpike surpassed more than 100,000 charging sessions.

BEREA, Ohio — The Ohio Turnpike has announced a "major milestone" in the volume of electric vehicle (EV) usage on the 241-mile toll road.

In a release, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission says last month it topped 100,000 EV charging sessions at its toll plazas.

“The number of EVs charged on the Ohio Turnpike has continued to increase steadily year-over-year since 2019,” said Ferzan Ahmed, executive director of the turnpike commission, in a statement. “As sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids continue to increase, we are considering options to increase the number of EV charging units at additional service plaza locations.”

The Ohio Turnpike currently offers 16 Electrify America charging units and 64 Tesla Supercharger units at eight service plazas. The first Electrify America charging stations opened in 2019, while Tesla began in 2021.

The Tesla Superchargers are available at each of the following eight service plazas:

  • Indian Meadow (westbound) and Tiffin River (eastbound) at milepost 20.8 in West Unity
  • Blue Heron (westbound) and Wyandot (eastbound) at milepost 76.9 in Genoa
  • Great Lakes (westbound) and Towpath (eastbound) at milepost 170.1 in Broadview Heights
  • Mahoning Valley (westbound) and Glacier Hills (eastbound) at milepost 237.2 in New Springfield

Electrify America’s charging stations are available at each of the following four service plazas:

  • Indian Meadow (westbound) and Tiffin River (eastbound) at milepost 20.8 in West Unity
  • Blue Heron (westbound) and Wyandot (eastbound) at milepost 76.9 in Genoa
