Demolition underway for Imagination Station pedestrian bridge

The bridge's removal will cause a temporary change in traffic pattern. Here is what to look out for as you head downtown.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The view down on Summit Street in downtown Toledo is about to change due to an update that is now underway.

The exciting news is, preparation for the construction of Imagination Station's KeyBank Discovery Theater has already begun.

Monday night, however, the contractor will begin to dismantle and remove the pedestrian bridge crossing Summit Street.

Every night this week, work will begin at 7 p.m., closing single lanes of traffic. Regular traffic patterns will resume at 6 a.m.

"It'll just be one direction with detours posted, so we'll keep as much open as we can during the time period and get it down as quickly as possible," Communications Director of the Imagination Station, Kate Pixler said.

Summit Street will then be closed to through traffic between Jefferson and Jackson streets beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday for removal of the pedestrian bridge. Sidewalks will also be unavailable.

The detour is to take Saint Clair one block up, but remember, Adams is also shut down a block in the other direction at Superior for underground work.

Summit Street will reopen Monday, June 24 at 5 a.m.

Despite the closures, Trinity Church and all local businesses said they will stay open during regular hours.

Barb Reese, General Manager of Foccacia's Delicatessen at the corner of Adams and Summit doesn't expect this to halt business either.

"(I am) excited to see all the new things happening over there and just excited to be a part of everything that's going on. People will find their way here, we aren't worried about it at all," she said.

Imagination Station will maintain regular business hours during the theater's construction.

For the most convenient access to the science center, you can use the Vistula Parking Garage at the corner of Summit and Cherry, and follow the underground concourse to Imagination Station.

If you're headed downtown this weekend for something like the ProMedica Concert Series featuring OAR Friday night, or to visit the museum, allow extra time.
