Person injured when excavator tips over at west Toledo building demolition site

The day before the injury, part of the structure on Phillips Avenue collapsed during the demolition, damaging Toledo Edison utility poles.

TOLEDO, Ohio — An excavator tipped over and a person suffered non-life-threatening injuries Monday and "several" Toledo Edison utility poles were damaged Sunday at the site of a building demolition in west Toledo.

A Toledo Fire & Rescue Department spokesperson told WTOL 11 that one person was hospitalized after being found at the scene of the excavator with non-life-threatening injuries.

The spokesperson said the excavator "was left in place until the owner could get a company to lift it back to the upright position."

It is unclear what caused the excavator to tip over.

The project is taking place at a building in the 900 block of Phillips Avenue. In June 2023, the vacant building partially collapsed; photos released by the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department showed a hole in the bricks in the side of the structure and a gaping, sunken hole in the roof.

According to a Toledo police report about the utility poles being damaged on Sunday, the demolition project is being done by SL Hauling, LLC.

The report states that "part of the structure" while SL Hauling, LLC, was demolishing the building Sunday afternoon, damaging the poles, as well as wires. Debris from the collapse also caused a traffic obstruction on Sylvania Avenue.

The city of Toledo did not respond to an after-hours request for comment and a voicemail was unable to be left for SL Hauling, LLC.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to correct the name of the construction vehicle that tipped over.
