Toledo City Council member resigns to take DEI job with city

Tiffany Whitman has been an at-large council representative since 2020.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo City Council Member Tiffany Whitman has resigned from her council seat to become the city's chief equity officer.

Whitman is set to become the Director of the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on Feb. 6. Her last meeting on city council will be Jan. 31

Whitman 41, who has been on city council since 2020, will be paid $125,000 in her new role.

In her new job, she will focus on compliance and investigations, accessibility services, supplier diversity, business and workforce inclusion, community relations, and mayoral priorities, according to a news release from the city.

"This was not an easy decision to make," Whitman said in a statement released to local media. "Serving in elected office in my hometown has been an honor. However, I am thrilled to join a special group of leaders who have worked in both the lawmaking and executive parts of local government. Most importantly, in my new role, I will still serve my community at the highest level. My commitment remains strong to make sure all Toledo residents, neighbors, and businesses not only do well but thrive."

Whitman previously worked as the Director of Student Success Initiatives at the University of Toledo.

Whitman's seat on city council will be filled by an appointee chosen by council. Council has 30 days to make the appointment.

Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz's administration also has announced that April Welch has been hired as the deputy director of economic development. Welch, 42, will be paid $115,000 and focus on small business development.
