Hole in ductwork above female locker room at Toledo fire station found; two investigations underway

TFRD administration was notified Monday that the ductwork in Station 13's female locker room had been tampered with. TFRD and TPD are both conducting investigations.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Fire Department and Toledo Police Department are conducting two investigations after a hole in the ductwork above Station 13's female locker room was discovered Monday, a TFRD spokesperson said Tuesday.

The hole in the ductwork has been repaired and TFRD is in the process of inspecting the locker room areas of the department's 17 other fire stations and all other buildings that fall under its jurisdiction, according to a press release from TFRD Pvt. Sterling Rahe.

"Any department violations or criminal activity found as a result of this investigation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and severely," Rahe said.

An email from TFRD Assistant Chief John Kaminski to all TFRD employees said department administration was notified by email Monday night that the ductwork above the locker room had been tampered with.

Kaminski said in the email that two "separate, but parallel" investigations -- one disciplinary and conducted by TFRD and one criminal and conducted by TPD -- were launched Tuesday morning.

"The department has taken steps today to inspect every female locker room at every TFRD fire station for any evidence of further tampering," Kaminski said.

The disciplinary investigation is an "open internal investigation" and TPD is conducting the criminal investigation with its forensic unit, Rahe said.

According to TFRD, no further comment on the matter will be made until the investigation is complete.

TFRD Station 13 is on Front Street in east Toledo.
