Habitat for Humanity applications open in Wood County

Habitat for Humanity of Wood County announced plans to build homes in the cities of Bradner, Rossford, Walbridge, and Wayne.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Housing prices are soaring, leaving many worried about not being able to afford to buy a home in their lifetime. This can create insecurities among first-time homebuyers who are looking to find a place to live for the rest of their lives.

Factors like high rent and bad credit can prevent people from having the opportunity to purchase a home, which can lead to a lifetime of renting.

To alleviate these problems, Habitat for Humanity of Wood County has opened its application process, giving people a chance to receive a locally built, affordable home.

"Many people do not realize that they are eligible for a Habitat for Humanity home," said Mark Ohashi, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Wood County, Inc.

Ohashi wants the public to apply but also wants people to know that if selected to receive a home, there is a process an applicant must complete first.

As part of the Homeownership Program, approved applicants must agree to contribute 200 "sweat equity" hours (or volunteer time), accompanied by mandatory monthly homeownership education workshops and "Financial Peace University" workshops, providing a pathway to financial stability.

Upon completion of these requirements, applicants can move into their new home. With a controlled mortgage the cost of living becomes significantly more affordable, easing financial burdens and providing peace of mind.
