'Without you guys stepping in, I would still have a hole in my house': Blissfield man's home finally repaired after bizarre accident

The gaping hole needed repairs for months and it got so cold the homeowners had to close off the entire second floor. But thanks to WTOL 11, they finally got a fix.

BLISSFIELD, Mich. — In July, a viewer in Blissfield sent some shocking photos to WTOL 11 of a set of semitrailer tires that had crashed through the second floor of his home. The dual tires had destroyed a room and left a gaping hole where the window once was.

It was a freak accident that homeowner Michael Alexander said was due to the nearby highway. The tires had flown off a passing semi, struck a tree in Alexander's yard, launched upward and smashed right through a second-story window.

After it happened, Alexander thought it would be a relatively quick fix. But he told WTOL 11 that for months, his insurance provider Homesite Insurance started dodging his calls, forcing him to hang a dangling tarp in place of a window instead.

When WTOL 11 last went to his house back in November, the entire wall had to be covered with a blanket and sealed with tape, blocking out the cold winter breeze.

Alexander and his wife had to move out of their bedroom and down into the living room because it was simply too cold to handle.

When Alexander told WTOL 11 about the unresolved situation, we called his personal insurance agent at Homesite and although they did not pick up, the voicemail apparently was received.

Alexander said only two days after WTOL 11 gave his insurance a call, they called him back, apologized for taking so long to get back to him and promised to fix it right away.

While they did not get to the scheduled repairs until February, Alexander said it is a relief just to see the repairs at all.

"It's amazing you guys helped out, really. It would still be going on, there's no doubt in my mind. I mean, really, there's no doubt in my mind. I was not getting any respect. I wasn't getting any callbacks," Alexander said. "Without you guys stepping in, I would still have a hole in my house."

Now Alexander said he's thrilled to be using his full house again and is crossing his fingers his home is not subject to any more freak accidents.

Meanwhile, the Lenawee County sheriff said that the driver of the semitrailer responsible for the damage was never located.
