Weathering the storm: Ways to cope with severe weather anxiety

Storms can be unpredictable, but if you experience severe weather anxiety, you can take control of how storms affect your everyday life.

SYLVANIA, Ohio — For many, an approaching storm might be inconvenient. But for others, severe weather can bring about anxiety.

Severe weather is going to happen no matter what. While it is unavoidable, there are ways to empower yourself through knowledge and preparation to help deal with the anxiety.

Although there's no way to stop storms, becoming more aware of when and how storms form could make a difference in combating severe weather anxiety.

"Mother Nature could be unpredictable at times. And there’s so much so much that we have control over, and Mother Nature we don’t necessarily have control over what’s going to be happening," Jennifer Reed, a therapist with ProMedica Behavioral Health, said. "So all of us feel that worry a lot and we’re not really sure exactly what next steps we have to take."

So what can you do to empower yourself not be scared of severe weather? Reed breaks down some strategies.

"The best thing that we can do is to stay informed, but not too over-obsessed with what’s happening or what could be happening," Reed said. "Again, we have to keep in mind what we have control over and what we don’t, and the things that we do have control over is to make sure that we’re prepared. Make sure that if we have an emergency preparedness plan in place and that we utilize it."

As we head throughout the severe weather season, having a plan in place ahead of time can relieve some of that weather-related stress and anxiety.
