4 defendants sentenced for involvement in 2023 homicide of Monroe woman

Steven Bails was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of Kayla Sedoskey last year. Narena Bails, Sierra Bemis and Alexander Feko were also sentenced.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — The Office of the Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney on Thursday announced the sentencings of four defendants convicted of charges in the 2023 homicide of a Monroe woman.

Steven Bails was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole after he was convicted in March of first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Kayla Sedoskey, who was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Facility in Frenchtown Township last year.

Narena Bails, Steven's wife, was sentenced to 13.5-30 years in prison. She pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide in February.

Sierra Bemis was sentenced to 18 years and nine months to 30 years in prison. She also pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide in February.

The fourth defendant sentenced, Alexander Feko, received 5-10 years after he pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and three counts of accessory after the fact to a felony.

Narena Bails, Bemis and Feko all testified at Steven Bails' trial.

Two other defendants, Brin Smith and Kaylyn Ramsey, both pleaded no contest to murder charges and are set to be sentenced on May 30.

The prosecuting attorney says that the motive for killing Sedoskey remains unclear, but that the investigation revealed Smith lured her into the abandoned facility where her killers then attacked her.

Prosecuting attorney Jeffery Yorkey "personally thanks the team of law enforcement officials from both the Michigan State Police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department along with the Michigan State Crime Lab.  Detective Sergeant Michael Peterson, from the Monroe Post of the Michigan State Police lead the nearly one-year long investigation. Dozens of law enforcement officials worked between agencies to collect the evidence used in this case," states a press release from the attorney's office.
