Memphis player pleads not guilty after punching BGSU player in WNIT post-game

Memphis' Jamirah Shutes pleaded not guilty to an assault charge after hitting BGSU's Elissa Brett in a postgame handshake line on March 23.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Memphis women's basketball player Jamirah Shutes pleaded not guilty to an assault charge in the Bowling Green Municipal Court Tuesday after she punched BGSU guard Elissa Brett in a postgame handshake line on March 23.

Shutes is scheduled to appear in court again on April 24 at 8:30 a.m.

The day after the punch, the BGSU Athletics Department released an update that Shutes was charged with assault.

Memphis' athletics department also said the incident was "extremely unfortunate and certainly not consistent with, or representative of, our expectations for our programs and student-athletes."

Brett and Shutes appeared to exchange words before Shutes hit her. Brett laid on the floor for a few minutes following the punch before being helped off the court. Shutes was escorted off the court by her team immediately after the punch.
