A guide to spotting the total lunar eclipse this weekend

Rain chances could spoil this weekend's lunar eclipse in northwest Ohio. But that doesn't mean you're completely out of luck.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Although we are expected to see cloudy skies, a total lunar eclipse is set for Sunday.

This moon is also called May’s Flower Moon. In northwest Ohio, the forecast calls for isolated showers on Sunday night, which will leave us with cloudy skies, meaning we will not likely see the total lunar eclipse.

But there are places you can drive just a few hours to see this beautiful bright moon.

A total lunar eclipse is when the earth gets to a point where it is between the sun and the moon.

Have you ever wondered what makes it look so red, with the nickname of a blood moon? Well, it originates from the earth being between the sun and moon when blue light is filtered out causing the red appearance to be more present while looking up in the sky.

If you plan to head out of town on Sunday to catch it you will not need any extra equipment to see the lunar eclipse. All you will need to do is look up!

The penumbral eclipse begins at 9:25 p.m., which will appear as a bright full moon. By 10:27, The partial lunar eclipse begins to give the moon a grayish look. This period will last for about an hour.

Then we will see the color of the moon turn reddish-brown signifying that the total lunar eclipse has begun. This should happen at 11:29 p.m., and then eventually transitions to a maximum lunar eclipse which will be the peak of the total lunar eclipse at 12:11 a.m. Monday.

By 12:53, the total lunar eclipse ends and the reddish look of the moon will start to fade away by the end of the partial eclipse at 1:55.

The total duration of this eclipse will be right around 85 minutes. With this weekend’s rain showers, it is unlikely that we will see it right here in Toledo. Driving a few hours in any direction may give you a shot at seeing this beautiful sight.
