HENRY COUNTY, Ohio — Two Defiance residents were killed in a single-car crash on Wednesday around 6 p.m.

The Henry County Sherriff's Office was alerted to the crash at 6:27 p.m. and were assisted by the Florida/Flatrock Volunteer Fire Department, Napoleon Fire & Rescue and Henry County Coroner Dr. Melinda Fritz M.D.

According to an investigation by the sherriff's office, Thomas Hernandez, age 18, was driving east bound on County Road 424, west of Defiance.

When the vehicle failed to make a right curve in the road, the error was overcorrected to the left, causing the vehicle to travel off the left side of the road. It struck two large trees off the side of the road before stopping. Both Hernandez and the passenger, Elisha Philpot, age 42, were fatally injured in the crash.

According to a press release by Henry County Sherriff Michael D. Bodenbender, both occupants were wearing seatbelts and speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. Hernandez and Philpot were transported to the Henry County Hospital Morgue.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
