WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — One person is in the hospital after two semis crashed into each other on I-75 in Wood County early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on southbound I-75 near the Eagleville Road Exit in North Baltimore around 4:25 a.m.

Police say 61-year-old Jeffery Smothers of Toledo was driving a semi in the right lane of I-75 when he rear-ended another semi driven by 68-year-old Samson Samson of Canada, who was also in the right lane.

After impact, Smothers' vehicle went off the right side of the road and came to rest in a ditch; police say he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Samson's vehicle came to rest on the shoulder; he was not injured.

Police say Smothers was distracted when he rear-ended Samson's vehicle, so Smothers was cited for failing to maintain assured cleared distance, distracted driving and failure to wear a seat belt.
