Port Clinton school construction delayed

The Port Clinton school district is behind schedule on the construction of a new middle school and elementary school due to wet weather in the area in 2011 and the beginning of 2012.

PORT CLINTON, OH (WTOL) – The Port Clinton school district is behind schedule on the construction of a new middle school and elementary school due to wet weather in the area in 2011 and the beginning of 2012.

Crews broke ground in the summer of 2010, and the middle school should be open in the fall. There is no estimate yet for the elementary school.

The district is consolidating two elementary schools, and will offer upgrades in technology, along with the middle school.

"The middle school is close to being on schedule, we've lost roughly 20 to 30 days, due to the weather, especially the rain that we've had. But we still feel we're on schedule to open at the start of next school year. The elementary school- we're looking at those timelines right now, we're still hopeful we're going to be able to make the start of the next school year, but we're trying to pin down an exact date, right now with our contractors." said Superintendent Pat Adkins.

The project is costing $42 million for both buildings, and because the district wasn't eligible for state funding, taxpayers are paying the entire bill. They approved a bond issue to cover the construction costs.
