Toledo, BG football squads looking to build on last season’s successes

The Rockets showed off for fans at their annual spring showcase on Saturday; BG is hoping to continue to improve on last year's winning season.

OHIO, USA — Both of the area’s Division I football teams had their last spring practices on Saturday, including Toledo’s annual Spring Showcase.

Toledo Rockets

The Rockets showed off at the Glass Bowl running 11 on 11 situations and 7 on 7 drills.

Toledo is coming off last season when they won 11 straight games to finish the regular season and won the MAC West before losing to Miami in the championship game.

The Rockets will also have some different faces this year.

Star quarterback Dequan Finn is gone.

Tucker Gleason looks like the guy this fall.

Head coach Jason Candle says he likes what he saw this spring all the way down the roster.

"It's rare that you can practice three full units throughout spring football. You always deal with injuries," said Coach Candle. "We really work three groups all the way and sometimes that's hard to get really good play out of three groups. But somebody off of that third unit always shows up and that's true again this spring." said Candle.

Bowling Green Falcons

Meanwhile the Bowling Green State University squad had their last practice for the spring.

The Falcons showed a lot of improvement last year, going 7-6, their first winning record since 2015.

BG also brings back a lot of key pieces like their first and second string quarterbacks.

Connor Bazelak and Camden Orth were both out this whole spring rehabbing from surgeries.

Head coach Scot Loeffler says the older guys know the playbook and says them being out gives the new guys like Lucien Anderson a chance to develop.

"Considering all the guys that were out all the youth that we have running around here I thought it was a real positive.  Where in the country does one quarterback get every single rep? It was great for Lucian even though we would have loved to have Connor and Cam out here. It was really good to get Lucien all this experience," said Coach Loeffler.
