'Elope at the Eclipse' offers a once-in-a-lifetime wedding opportunity

The free event will have couples saying "I do" during the three minutes of totality during the total solar eclipse on April 8.

TIFFIN, Ohio — If you're ready to get married but don't have a date picked out yet, you have a chance to Elope at the Eclipse this April in Seneca County.

Destination Seneca County is planning for multiple events during the upcoming solar eclipse, but Elope at the Eclipse will be the shortest.

Couples can sign up for a free mass wedding ceremony, held at Tiffin's East Green Amphitheater.

All you have to do is register online and bring a valid marriage license. Destination Seneca County even has a step-by-step process for people visiting from out of the county or state.

"It'll go dark for about three-plus minutes, and then it'll light back up and you'll be a married couple and on your way and maybe onto a honeymoon after," said Bryce Riggs, executive director of Destination Seneca County.

Jenny Harris and Bart Lombardy have been together for a decade and engaged for two years. Every time they tried to plan a wedding, the logistics were too complicated. That was until Jenny learned about the special ceremony being held on April 8.

"I said, 'Sign us up! We're going to do this.' And everyone laughed and said, 'Don't you need to talk to Bart first?' He'd be totally down for this." said Harris.

Couples who wish to renew their wedding vows are also invited to register as well.

"It's a memory that everybody will have and it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Harris. "As Bryce said, that 75 years from now it might happen again but to be in the totality and have it all that day was an exciting opportunity."

With the party atmosphere already in the area, couples who sign up won't have to worry about other traditional wedding expenses.

"We're going to work with our local bakeries on some wedding cakes. We have a musician coming in that's going to do the first dance after the wedding and the first toast," said Riggs.

"The bonus is Bryce [Riggs] gets to do everything and do all of the planning, and all you have to do is show up," said Lombardy.

Bryce said there is no limit to how many couples they can accommodate for this wedding ceremony and you can sign up as late as April 5.
