TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - It's a sign of the times. As more plug-in electric cars hit the roads, the city of Toledo is looking to accommodate drivers with an electric vehicle and visit or work in the downtown area.
Crews are in the process of taking out three parking meters along Superior near Adams, with plans to install three electric car charging stations. That's expected to happen within the next seven to 10 days. The pilot program costs the city $7,200, with money coming out of the city's public service budget.
Ed Moore, Toledo Public Service director, says if those stations get used, it's likely other charging stations will go up in more locations.
"We wanted to provide a service to the citizens that allows them to charge their cars during the day. We look at it as a pilot program. We want to monitor its usage and see how popular it becomes," said Moore.
The parking spaces will be reserved for electric vehicles, and people will still have to pay to park in the spaces.
