Sylvania parents upset following school bus mishaps

Many parents are not happy with the new school bus system in Sylvania.  The district is responding after many of its buses were late on the first day of school.

SYLVANIA, OH (WTOL) - Many parents are not happy with the new school bus system in Sylvania.

The district is responding after many of its buses were late on the first day of school.

Additionally, some students got on the wrong bus at the end of the day and were not dropped off until after 5 p.m.

"We take ownership for some of the things that happened yesterday. So again these hiccups happen but we're doing our best to resolve them and make sure the kids are safe," said Sylvania School Superintendent Dr. Adam Fineske.

This year, the Sylvania Schools implemented an online registration for buses.

The school district said that there were parents who did not properly register online for the new system until the last minute which changed driver schedules.

"And so what that did was it threw a little bit of trickiness into the bus drivers routes and what kids were supposed to be picked up. So we had a few students who missed the bus and had to be driven to school, a couple buses were late because of that," said Fineske.

Bus drivers met with school officials at 6 a.m. which is where they were given updated routes for the day.

School officials said that the district is working to communicate with parents about this issue, but some parents said that they have received no communication from the school at all.

"He got home about 4:30 yesterday. I got no phone call from the school or the transportation department that my child would be late. I was sitting here worried not knowing if my son walked home from school, or what happened," said Sylvania parent Michelle Good.

The district said that they have added two staff members to their office to take concerned phone calls from parents.

They encourage anyone to report problems directly them at 419-824-8686.
