Students at Tiffin Calvert's high school campus dismissed after 'threatening' note found in hallway

The principal said the high school campus was placed in a soft lockdown after a handwritten note was found in the hallway that "detailed concern."

TIFFIN, Ohio — Calvert Catholic's high school campus in Tiffin was dismissed early Tuesday after a handwritten note was found in the hallway that "detailed concern," according to the school's principal.

Principal Megan Schultz said the high school was placed in a soft lockdown at approximately 9:51 p.m. at the academy and high school campus. The Tiffin Police Department said there was a "threatening" note which mentioned the presence of a weapon at the school.

"In an abundance of caution and prioritizing the safety of students and faculty, it was determined that the students should be evacuated for the remainder of the day," Tiffin police said in a press release.

The school said they worked with Tiffin police and the sheriff's office to check students' bags and conduct a sweep of each classroom, individual locker and common space. According to the principal and police, those searches did not result in any further findings.

Tiffin police said detectives are investigating the incident. A press release from the department read in part:

"We want to assure parents, students, and the community that we take all threats seriously and prioritize the safety of our schools. We appreciate everyone's cooperation and understanding during this time.

Here's the full statement the principal provided to WTOL 11:

"Calvert Catholic School is grateful that all students, faculty and staff are safe following the soft lockdown at the academy/high school campus. The reason for the dismissal, a handwritten note was found in the hallway which detailed concern for the safety of the building. Please understand we do not take these concerns lightly. In partnership with Tiffin Police and Sheriff Departments we checked each student's bag, conducted a sweep of each classroom, individual locker and common space resulting in no further findings."
