Sylvania Twp. names next Chief of Police, announces other promotions

The promotion comes less than a month after Chief Paul Long announced his retirement.

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Sylvania Township police announced the promotion of officers and command staff Thursday, including the new police chief who will begin her role in April, following the retirement of the current department chief. 

In a social media post Wednesday, Sylvania Township Police said Sarah Toth was promoted from Lieutenant to Chief of Police, a role she will begin April 1 when current chief Paul Long retires. Toth has been a member of Sylvania Township PD since 1996, and was recommended the role by Long when he announced his retirement.

In addition to Toth, several others were promoted. Officer McKenzie Heagney was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was assigned to supervise the midnight shift of the department's patrol division. Heagney has been with the department since 2020. 

Sergeant Kevin Steinman, who has been a member of the department since 2009, was promoted to Lieutenant and will be responsible for overseeing support services for the department, Sylvania Township PD said.
