Sylvania Twp. Fire Chief to retire after board of trustees approves separation agreement

Fire Chief Mike Ramm was placed on paid leave pending an investigation in February.

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Sylvania Township Fire Chief Mike Ramm will retire in early 2025 after the township Board of Trustees voted on an agreement resolution Monday. Ramm was placed on paid leave in February on allegations of unfair labor practices.

The board voted to approve a separation, waiver, and release agreement with Ramm, who has served as the township's fire chief for eight years. In the agreement, trustees said Ramm will remain on paid administrative leave until April 30.

Beginning May 1, Ramm will be paid his remaining sick leave and holiday pay through his retirement date on Feb. 28, 2025.  According to the agreement, Ramm had accrued 1,632 sick hours and 112 hours of holiday pay, which will be paid out on a biweekly basis.

Following his retirement, Ramm will be paid the remainder of his sick leave and other accrued paid time off, which amounts to 134.26 sick hours, 240 vacation hours, 24 personal hours and eight remaining bonus hours. In total, Ramm will be paid $23,422.08 of pay, subject to taxes and applicable deductions.

Ramm will also receive a longevity payment from the township in accordance with policy in January, amounting to nearly $6,000.

Though Ramm will not officially retire until February 2025, the agreement states Ramm must refrain from all official duties and must not represent Sylvania Township in any capacity.

Following Ramm's paid leave, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Nye was made acting fire chief. According to township trustee John Jennewine, Nye has agreed to stay on as acting fire chief now that Ramm is no longer with the department.

The township had hired outside counsel to investigate the allegations against Ramm. The results of the investigation were not made available.
