Ohio Turnpike warning of 'unpaid tolls' text scam

Legitimate collections of unpaid tolls will never occur over text, the Turnpike said.

OHIO, USA — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is warning the public about a text-based scam that claims to request unpaid tolls.

According to a press release from the Turnpike, the scam includes text messages that fraudulently claim to represent tolling agencies from around the country, asking users to pay their unpaid toll balances. The Turnpike said it never requests payment for tolls and toll violations over text. All legitimate Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass links will include www. ezpassoh.com and ohioturnpike.org.

Leaders with the Turnpike said recipients of the scam texts seem to be at random and are not related to any account or toll road usage.

If you receive one of these fraudulent scam texts, the FBI, which the Ohio Turnpike said is aware of the scam, recommends you do the following to report it by doing the following:

  • File a complaint with the IC3 at ic3.gov and include the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within the text.
  • Check your account using the toll service's legitimate website
  • Contact the Ohio Turnpike's E-ZPass customer service center at (440) 971-2222
  • Delete any texts scam texts received
  • If you clicked any link or provided any information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts
