Federal, area officials conduct inspection at Ashland Manor Wednesday

The inspection included eight HUD officials, four health officials, four code compliance officials and four TPD officers, said city council member Vanice Williams.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Officials from various area departments and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development gathered at the Ashland Manor apartment complex, which has been under a watchful eye since it was cited for a variety of public health issues in early January, for an inspection Wednesday.

Eight HUD officials and four representatives each from the following departments were present at the inspection of more than 140 HUD-subsidized units, according to Toledo City Council member Vanice Williams: Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, Toledo Code Compliance and the Toledo Police Department.

Williams, who represents the district that Ashland Manor sits in in central Toledo, said the inspection's results are not yet public.

She also said property managers were onsite and replacing flooring during the inspection.

Williams said she did not know when HUD would return to Ashland Manor. After a meeting with HUD officials in Washington, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said HUD schedules its next inspection based on the inspection score that a property receives during its previous inspection.

The property has improved in the weeks since city officials cracked down. Williams said the building has added onsite property management and security it previously did not have and has cleaned up excessive trash and vermin.

A task force of city, county and state-level officials has also been formed to monitor Toledo's problem rental housing properties.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown's office is one of these groups involved in the task force. In a statement last week, his office said a meeting on Friday regarding Ashland Manor and the similarly troubled Covenant House was "productive."
