Traffic is expected to be worse than average for Memorial Day weekend, AAA says

AAA expects record numbers to travel across the United States for the holiday weekend and wants to make sure you arrive safely to wherever you're going and back.

TOLEDO, Ohio — With Memorial Day weekend coming this weekend, many people will be traveling on Ohio roads.

AAA expects record numbers to travel across the United States for the holiday weekend. Because of this, AAA is reminding drivers of tips for safe travel.

Cindy Russo, the Retail Office Manager for AAA in Toledo, says that preparation and leaving early are keys to getting to your destination.

"We're anticipating one of the busiest road travel weekends, with nearly 38 million Americans hitting the roads," Russo said. "Remember to plan your journey, take your time, and be prepared for the traffic. If you encounter any emergency personnel, slow down and move over."

AAA recommends that you get your car serviced as soon as possible so that you can reach your destination without needing roadside assistance.

It also is important to monitor your gas tank because you might be in a remote area where gas is not available.

AAA expects a little over 92,000 people to travel to northwest Ohio during the weekend.

Sandy Wiechman, who is the Safe Communities Coordinator for Safe Communities of Wood County, shared her most important tip for staying safe while driving.

"What you need to do is just make sure the only thing you need to do in your vehicle is concentrate on your drive. 100% of your attention needs to be on your drive," Wiechman said. "You need not drive distracted."

In both Ohio and Michigan, distracted driving is against the law and carries legal consequences.

Keeping an eye on the road also means keeping an eye on posted speeds.

"Stay within the speed limits," Wiechman said. "A lot of times, people like to speed because they want to get to where they are going."

In Ohio, AAA's estimates mark the second-highest number of people expected to travel by car, with an expected 1.5 million people driving to their destination this Memorial Day weekend.
