ProMedica closing Cleveland skilled nursing facility, laying off 92 employees

The layoffs at the ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation facility at MetroHealth include 33 nurse aides and 17 nurse supervisor LPNs.

CLEVELAND — ProMedica is closing a skilled nursing facility in Cleveland and laying off 92 employees — including 33 nurse aides and 17 nurse supervisor LPNs — as the Toledo-based healthcare company continues its divestiture from skilled nursing.

Announced in early April, ProMedica and joint venture partner MetroHealth did not provide a reason why they decided to close the ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation facility at MetroHealth.

The facility stopped accepting new patients on April 1 and is expected to close by early summer after the release or transfer of all patients has been completed.

The layoffs are expected to be permanent and "be effective in the fourteen-day period beginning May 31, 2024," ProMedica said in a press release.

ProMedica also said the affected employees do not have bumping rights available to them and are not represented by a union.

MetroHealth said in a separate press release that all of its employees working at the Cleveland facility "will be offered positions with the System moving forward."

ProMedica in 2022 announced it would divest from all of its skilled nursing ventures, which had been responsible for the bulk of the company's losses that year.

In 2023, ProMedica laid off more than 250 skilled nursing employees, as well as a couple of dozen skilled nursing support staff.

The healthcare giant ended 2023 with an operating loss significantly less than it did in 2022, according to the company's quarterly financial filings.
