University of Toledo names interim president

Matt Schroeder, who has served as executive vice president at UToledo since 2019, will be the interim president following the departure of Gregory Postel.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo on Monday announced a new interim president following the departure of Gregory Postel.

UToledo Board of Trustees approved a resolution to make Matt Schroeder, who has served as executive vice president at the university since January 2019 and is a UToledo alumnus, the interim president.

The university said that while contract negotiations are ongoing, Schroeder's tenure is expected to begin May 20, the day after Postel's final day in the position.

“I am honored the Trustees have placed their confidence in me to lead UToledo during a time of great opportunity for this University as we rise to the current challenges facing higher education and healthcare while setting ourselves apart as a leader,” Schroeder said. “I understand the importance of UToledo to our students, to our patients, to our faculty, to our staff, and to the greater Toledo community. We are committed to not just maintaining but enhancing our status as an excellent public research university and academic medical center.”

The announcement comes after the school's president, Gregory Postel, announced last week that he is leaving to be the senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.

As executive vice president at UToledo, Schroeder oversaw the finance, budget, facilities, auxiliaries, information technology, human resources, public safety and compliance functions. Before that, he served as chief operating officer and vice president of real estate and business development at the university.

“We are fortunate to have a strong leader in Matt Schroeder who has spent his career serving The University of Toledo with knowledge and experience across our academic, clinical and fundraising operations,” said Will Lucas, chair of the UToledo Board of Trustees. “I again want to thank Dr. Postel for his leadership and for leaving the university better than he found it. Matt is the right person to continue building on that strong foundation and accelerate UToledo’s positive direction toward an even brighter future.”
