Fostoria police arrest man who allegedly shot at officers during pursuit

Police arrested Elijah Keiffer on multiple weapons charges Wednesday after he fled officers responding to a call of a suspicious person attempting to open vehicles.

FOSTORIA, Ohio — Police in Fostoria on Wednesday arrested a man on multiple weapons charges after he allegedly shot at officers during a foot pursuit.

Elijah Keiffer, 26, of Fostoria, was arrested on felony charges of possession of weapons under disability, discharging a firearm in the city and possession of a stolen firearm.

Fostoria police said officers at 1 a.m. on Wednesday responded to a call of a suspicious person attempting to open vehicle doors on South Main Street.

Officers eventually found Keiffer in the area wearing all black and carrying a black bag. When they approached him, he ran, according to police. When officers chased him westbound down McLean Street across South Union Street and warned him of being tased, he fired a shot.

Police say Keiffer was eventually caught while throwing items over a fence he was unable to get over himself.

Officers found a black bag "containing a large amount of coins and numerous other items officers were able to determine were stolen from several vehicles on the south end of Fostoria" on the other side of the fence, police said. A pistol and a spent shell casing were also found, but not the spent round.

"While the spent casing and gun were located, investigators were unable to locate the spent round, at this time. The location of the evidence found, in alignment with where Mr Keiffer was apprehended, suggests and are consistent with Mr Keiffer shooting the gun at the pursuing officers," Fostoria police said on social media.

Police said the firearm was found to have been stolen during a car break-in near Arcadia, about six miles southwest of Fostoria, a few days prior.

Additional charges against Keiffer are pending upon further investigation and prosecutor review, according to police.
