Harsh winter forces Perrysburg to double road repairs this spring

The city of Perrysburg is faced with more road projects than usual after this year's harsh winter.

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - Leaders in Perrysburg are making a move to fix what was broken by the harsh winter.

Winter weather has forced the city to double what they normally would do for paving roads, along with the amount budgeted for it.

"Some need repaved. Some need even more than that. Torn up and repaved in other spots. It's more than just filling potholes," said John Kevern, Perrysburg City Council president.

You can see some of the problems popping up around the city. Besides potholes, the roads are cracking and curbs are breaking apart.

Many roads are being considered for the work, but a list of streets won't be finalized for a couple more weeks.

"The winter has probably taken a toll on the roads. Perrysburg generally gets things right sooner or later, so I would think they're going to get this right too, get them fixed," said resident Denny Barrett.

Residents will get smoother roads and they won't have to pay for it with any tax increase. A total of $900,000 has been set aside in this year's budget for road work. Last month, council moved an additional $960,000 from its rainy day fund to add to it.

On Tuesday night, council hired a design engineering firm and will soon hire the contractor.

"Whether it will save lives or anything, I don't know, but it will bring us up to the city that we think we are," said Kevern.

With prime construction season ahead, road work could begin next month.
