Officials ID man's body pulled from Maumee River near Sandpiper boat dock

41-year-old Thomas Mauricio's cause of death was ruled as drowning while the manner of death remains under investigation by the coroner's office.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A man's body was discovered Thursday morning in the Maumee River near the Sandpiper dock in downtown Toledo and was identified by the Lucas County Coroner's Office on Friday.

Toledo Fire & Rescue responded to a call just before 9:30 a.m. in the Promenade Park area. TFRD spokesperson Pvt. Sterling Rahe told our WTOL 11 crew on the scene a body was being recovered at the time.

On Friday, he was identified as 41-year-old Thomas Mauricio. The Lucas County Coroner's Office ruled the cause of death as drowning and the manner of death remains under investigation.

Authorities said that on Sunday, an individual was seen by bystanders as either falling or jumping from the bridge near 1 Owens Corning Parkway. 

"(The recovery was) in the vicinity of where we've been searching since Monday night for an individual that entered the water," Rahe said on Thursday. "We were out Monday night, we were out Tuesday and out yesterday searching this general area, but the positive identification and the circumstances behind it will come out from law enforcement as well as the coroner."

Dive teams were called to the Owens Corning building when a man was reported to have entered the water, but did not resurface. Divers, cadaver dogs and sonar scanning was used to search for the man but were unable to find him, according to TFRD.
