The mind during Toledo's water woes

Medical experts say that people have been experiencing higher levels of anxiety and fear because of the reports of microcystin in raw water sources.

(Toledo News Now) - Medical experts say that people have been experiencing higher levels of anxiety and fear because of the reports of microcystin in raw water sources. Katie Smith, a clinical therapist at Harbor Behavioral Health, an affiliate of ProMedica says everyone needs to pay close attention to the experts on the issue and not react until there is a need to react to avoid hypervigilance – over preparing for a situation.

Smith also says it can be hard to decipher which information is factual with so many sources speculating on the safety of our water and cautions against people drawing their own definite conclusions.

"Especially given what happened last year – there was this pretty intense breakout nervous energy and anxiety about, you know: where we are going to get our clean water, how we are going to take showers, where we are going to find clean drinking water. And, so people really want to be prepared for that," Smith says. "And I think that does cause a lot of anxiety."
