Only on 11: Toledo couple with disabilities unable to park in handicap spots

A Toledo couple is at their wit's end. Both have disabilities and say they can't park in the handicap-designated spots at their apartment complex because others are parking there illegally.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Toledo couple is at their wit's end. Both have disabilities and say they can't park in the handicap-designated spots at their apartment complex because others are parking there illegally.

Dale and Tracey talked exclusively to Toledo News Now about why this is happening and what apartment management is doing to fix the problem.

A picture was posted to Facebook Tuesday morning of a car parked in the handicapped spot outside the building. The car was not designated as handicapped, and the reserved sign was removed from the post at the parking spot.

“I got here less than an hour after that Facebook post was made, and here's what I found: The car is gone,” said Dale Herren.

It's a battle they've been fighting for over a year. The sign has been stolen twice and cars constantly park in the two reserved spots. Tracey, who walks with a cane, has had to park on the street.

Dale says he has contacted management at Georgetown Village many times and nothing is done.

“[We feel] very helpless. That's why I got the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) involved,” he said. “In fact, I have on my phone, phone numbers for attorneys for disability discrimination because I feel I have been discriminated against.”

Toledo News Now attempted to talk to management for the apartments but they would not comment on the matter.
