Area runners headed back to Boston 1 year after bombings

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) - Every Thursday night the Second Sole Store at Levis Commons in Perrysburg hosts a group run and walk. It took on a special meaning this week because many are headed to the Boston Marathon.

They're going to support the three killed and hundreds injured during last year's race.

"It will make it easier to dig down. But you're not going to worry about your time because of the bigger picture," said Matt Folk.

And the crowd along the route is expected to be enthusiastic and encouraging.

"I think it will be good because there will be a lot more people, crowd support different from a lot of marathons. Not a lot of people but more people in the latter stages," said John Gilbert.

Rob Slater has been planning for the Boston Marathon since last year's deadly event.

"It's going to be very emotional. I was there last year when the explosions happened," said Slater.

Slater was a block away and had just finished the marathon. He says he's still processing what happened but looks forward to Monday.

"It's going to be a big reunion for people who were there last year. It's going to feel like a big family reunion. Big event," said Slater.

But there's no other place he'd rather be, even after a brush with death.
