Sleepwalking 10-year-old drives through south Toledo, crashes into 4 vehicles

Toledo police say a 10-year-old girl took a family member's keys and drove off, crashing into multiple vehicles just after 7 a.m. Monday.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo police say a 10-year-old girl took a family member's keys and drove off, crashing into multiple vehicles just after 7 a.m. Monday.

According to police, the girl drove down the street about two and a half blocks, hitting a semi truck on Western Avenue and three parked cars on Dale Street.

Police say she was scared and crying when they arrived. Neighbors say they helped her out of the car and tried to keep her calm. Her mom picked her up from the scene.

The child's step dad says she has a developmental disability and is known to sleepwalk, but she has never done something like this.

"All I got to say is make sure you keep your keys way up, or hide them under your mattress, so your kids can't get them," said Elton Shreves.

No serious injuries were reported.

Police say the 10-year-old has been cited with failure to control, not wearing a seatbelt, and operating a vehicle without a license.

Police say it is standard procedure to cite in a situation like this, so the victims can get help from their insurance companies with repairs.

The child was not arrested, but she will have to appear in juvenile court within the next couple of weeks. However, police say it is very possible the case could be thrown out.
