Citizens gather for new information on Westgate Expansion

Approximately 50 people gathered Wednesday evening to find out how they would be affected by a multi-million dollar expansion at the Westgate Shopping Center.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Approximately 50 people gathered Wednesday evening to find out how they would be affected by a multi-million dollar expansion at the Westgate Shopping Center.

A number of residents aren't worried about the expansion, citing a previous new development on the south side of Central, where a Costco and other businesses opened in 2007.

"The neighborhood has already been impacted by the economic development of the re-done Westgate," said Kyle Grefe, who lives near the shopping center.  "I think that this only adds to the value of the neighborhood."

At Wednesday's presentation, neighbors were able to see the expansion plans.  The Arnie's and El Nuevo Vallarta restaurants will be torn down, and three new buildings will go up.

The CEO of the developer said they have letters of intent, but since no one has signed a lease, she still can't name names of stores that will be coming.  She did however hint to the crowd that a number of restaurants would be involved.

Questions from the audience were about attracting local businesses and how bright the lights would be.  City Counilman Tom Waniewski promised to help the neighbors relay any concerns they will have.

The County Plan Commission could approve the development next month, which would allow demolition or construction to begin.
