City to buy 800 new fire hydrants with safety, cost savings in mind

Toledo City Council voted Tuesday to buy 800 new fire hydrants for the city at a cost of just over $1 million.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo City Council voted Tuesday to buy 800new fire hydrants for the city at a cost of just over $1 million.

City leaders say the new hydrants withfeature an anti-tampering mechanism to stop civilians from opening them. Thatwill help prevent waste of valuable water, and keep water pressure high enoughin case of a fire.

Leaders also say buying so many hydrants atone time will save the city money.

"Ordinarily when we engage in processes wereplace the hydrant if we replace the street and so we're hoping to buy in bulkso we can get a better rate than some of our contractors could get," saidcouncilmen Lindsay Webb.

The city has not said when the hydrants willstart to be installed.
