Foreclosures continue to decrease in Lucas County

A new report shows foreclosures continue to decline in Lucas County.

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) - A new report shows foreclosures continue to decline in Lucas County.

Information from the Clerk of Courts' office shows through August of this year, there were 1,352 foreclosure filings. That compares to 1,985 during the same time period last year. That's a 32 percent decrease.

Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak has been working closely with the local foreclosure prevention task force. She says when comparing to 2009, when the local economy bottomed out, unemployment going down and efforts to keep people in their homes went up, and she credits that for this trend.

"There's a magistrate in Lucas County Common Pleas Court," she said. "The judges have done a terrific job making sure the magistrate doesn't do a foreclosure unless it's the last and final straw. We continue to invite people to use the resources through the fair housing center."

In 2009, there were 4,160 foreclosures in Lucas County. At the current pace, this year's total would come in at around 1,800.
