Hungarian heritage on display at east Toledo fest

East Toledo is celebrating its proud Hungarian heritage this weekend. The 39th annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival is underway.

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - East Toledo is celebrating its proud Hungarian heritage this weekend.

The 39th annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival is underway.

This free family event features dancing, cultural displays, arts and crafts.

But the big draw for many is the delicious Hungarian food prepared by women in the neighborhood; hunky turkey, stuffed cabbage, palacsinta, gulyas, and, of course, chicken paprikas.

They say there's a secret in the recipe.

"Seasoning. Lots of seasoning. Start out with chicken, make the dumplings and mix it all together and you have chicken paprikas," said Betty Ujvagi.

The festival runs until 10 pm Saturday night and resumes Sunday at noon. The festival ends Sunday evening at 9 pm.
