Maumee mourns loss of Heisman-winning alumnus

Maumee residents are mourning the loss of 1951 Heisman Trophy winner Dick Kazmeier, especially the school district. Kazmeier was an advocate for education.

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) - Maumee residents are mourning the loss of 1951 Heisman Trophy winner Dick Kazmeier, especially the school district. Kazmeier was an advocate for education.

Kazmeier graduated from Maumee High School in 1948. He won the Heisman Trophy at Princeton, but Kazmeier never forgot where he came from.

Every summer, health permitting, he came back to the Maumee area for a golf outing to raise money for the district's athletics. He also gave out 11 $1,000 scholarships to Maumee High School football student athletes.

The high school is filled with jerseys, cards, and even the Heisman Trophy.

"For those of us who got a chance to know him, what a humble and hardworking, dedicated individual he was," said Superintendent Dr. Gregory Smith.

The school district plans to continue Kazmeier's scholarship fund.
