First Marathon Classic a success

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The first year of the new Marathon Classic turned out to be a big success.

The heat didn't stop the crowds from heading out to watch the best female golfers in the world. Sylvania business owners say thanks to the tournament, sales were up over the weekend.

For five years, Chandler's Café on Main Street in Sylvania has seen thousands of spectators come into town for the LPGA tournament.

"We increase our staff and it's good! We're always really busy, so it's always a really positive thing for us," said Laurie Stansley, co-owner of Chandler's Café.

This was the first year for Paddy Jack's, also on Main Street. Kitchen Manager Joshua Meyers says sales aren't in yet, but they possibly doubled their normal weekend sales.

"We usually have good business throughout the week, but with the golf and everything, all the golfers came out. They were great," Meyers said. "They loved the food, so hopefully that spreads our name around the city."

And this year's tournament had a new sponsor. Marathon Petroleum has signed on for a multi-year contract. Tournament Executive Director Judd Silverman says the company provides a great financial foundation for the event.

"We couldn't be more excited for our future and what we're going to be able to do for charity," Silverman said. "And to continue to grow the tournament, both in terms of the purse, so that we always attract the best field, the best players in the world, and what we do for children's charities in northwest Ohio."

This was the first year of a 3-year contract between the LPGA and Highland Meadows Golf Club, so area businesses will enjoy the large crowds for at least two more years.
