TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo Police has 17 new allies in their mission to keep the Glass city safe.

After a week-long training, TPD and the Area Office on Aging graduated 17 new members to the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP).

RSVP is a way for retired men and women to give back to the community. They spend the week training with police in areas such as defensive driving, crime scene training, and lessons in tasers.

They then perform a variety of services, such as checking on the elderly.

"It's very exciting because if I have 17 individuals who volunteer their time to help serve this community, it's nothing short of outstanding," said TPD Chief Derrick Diggs. "These 17 individuals bring our ranks in the RSVP program up to 70."

The new recruits will start patrolling Monday.
