TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Fire crews battled a massive house fire on the corner of Locust and Swan streets in North Toledo Thursday night not long after 6:30.

The house was vacant and boarded up.

Flames could be seen shooting several feet in the air, dwarfing the firefighters holding hoses on the ground below.

Toledo Battalion Chief Bob Krause said it was "very suspicious."

The fire appeared to start in the basement. In only about 35 minutes the roof caved in, walls fell, and the house was reduced to rubble.

"But it was a very boarded up, very secure building that presented a tremendous risk to the fire crews, so we opened it up the best we could," Krause said. "And we did not have an interior fire fight because of the risk to fire crews so we brought it to the ground."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
