Rossford police getting canine unit

The Rossford Police Department is getting a canine unit, and police say it will help them crack down on crime in the area.

ROSSFORD, OH (WTOL) – The Rossford Police Department is getting a canine unit, and police say it will help them crack down on crime in the area.

The department stated that it has wanted a canine unit for a while, and the City Council has approved a dog, a car and an officer to get the unit started.

Police say they believe the unit will do more than just cut back on drugs. They say it will help them with searches, tracking and traffic stops. That is the reason they say they have seen community support for the effort.

Training for the unit will begin in April, and police have told City Council that the costs will add up to nearly $43,000.

The best part is that the money does not have to come from taxpayers. Instead, they are using funds from drug trafficking seizures.

"It's the bad guys' money, and we're going to use it to fight the bad guys. So it's a win-win for the community I think to have a tool like a canine unit that can not only do what we've been doing without a canine unit, but even more so." explained Chief Glenn Goss.

Police say they expect to have the unit up and running by the end of May.
