Glass City Crawlers on call for snow emergency

A local group is getting ready to drive hospital employees to work using their Jeep Wranglers, if the city sees a level three snow emergency.

TOLEDO (WTOL) - Toledo is known for Jeep and now a local group is getting ready to drive hospital employees to work using their Jeep Wranglers, if the city sees a level three snow emergency.

"We can take that knowledge that we use all the time on the trail and apply it to the level three snow emergencies when we're trying to drive through inclimate weather,” Thomas Wilson with Glass City Crawlers said.

Wilson works at St. Charles, so he knows how important it is for hospitals to be well-staffed during snow emergencies.

"Safety is always key no matter what you're doing, so we try to get people in so we don't get stuck there,” Wilson said.

It also helps Peter D'Amore, the Chief of Police at Mercy Health because he knows that employees are getting safe rides to work.

"The Glass City Crawlers is going to be huge for us to expand our resources to get a group of people who know how to operate their four wheel drive vehicles in the inclimate weather in the tough conditions,” Chief D’Amore said.

The Crawlers are making sure people don't have to travel further than their driveway, or a hospital exit.

"From door-to-door, if anyone we bring in, will have to get home as well,” D’Amore said.

The group already has 32 volunteers signed up. That's in addition to members like Wilson who are also hospital employees.

"We have a great deal of 4 by 4′s in the area, so why not volunteer to be able to help out our fellow Toledoans,” Wilson said.
