TOLEDO (WTOL) - A University of Toledo scientist just got millions of dollars to continue research that may help cancer patients.
The $2.1 million grant will be used to look into the role blood platelets play in the body’s natural defense against an infection commonly called “Thrush.”
It’s one of the most common and debilitating conditions experienced by patients undergoing treatment for head or neck cancers.
“These can cause some serious complications and many cancer patients actually give up their cancer treatment because they can’t deal with some of these off-target effects from fungal infections,” says UT assistant professor of biological sciences, Dr. Heather Conti.
Dr. Conti has been researching this topic since 2005, but work with the grant funding begins in January.
