Cincinnati casino on track for Spring opening

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

On Thursday, The Horseshoe Casino in Cincinnati gave the media a hard hat tour to show how construction is progressing at the new downtown casino.

Once it is finished, the Horseshoe Casino will be 400,000 square feet with about 100,000 of that being designated for gaming.

Jim Hess, Senior Vice-President with Messer Construction says the project is on schedule.

"Our progress on construction is going very well," said Hess.

Hess says there are more than 500 workers on the job to make sure the casino opens on time.

"We're probably approaching 75-percent complete having expended roughly 125, $30 million of our total overall construction budget," he said.

Horseshoe Casino General Manager Kevin Kline says the casino will have large gaming areas, restaurants and an eye-catching glass entrance.

"The vibe is we want to create a sense of arrival that we think is very becoming of the energy and excitement that comes with bringing a horseshoe to downtown Cincinnati," said Kline.

Senior Project Manager Jason Shorten says the design of the casino is intended to engage the Queen city.

"Inside out design where you can actually enter in to some of the restaurants from the outside without having to enter the casino which is different from other casinos throughout the US," said Shorten.

The casino is expected to create about 1700 jobs.  Lisa Rexroat-Steele, the casino's Vice President of human resources says they're trying to fill many of those jobs now.

"We're very, very pleased with our applicant flow at this point. We encourage others to continue to apply. Our application window will be open through September 16th which is next Sunday," she said.

Rexroat-Steele is even encouraging laid off workers from the Hollywood casino apply....she says they're looking for dealers with great people skills.

"No experience is required to work in our dealer positions. We really are hiring for attitude, we'll train for aptitude," she said.

Outside the casino there are some infrastructure improvement including the widening and straightening of Reading Road and the creation of green space across the street from the casino. The casino is still looking for games dealers and supervisors.

So far, they've received 4,200 applications.

Officials say the casino is on-track for a Spring 2013 opening.
