WYANDOT COUNTY, Ohio — Troopers are investigating a fatal crash that left a driver trapped in a car engulfed in flames Saturday evening in Pitt Township.

Police say a driver on a 2019 Toyota Highlander was travelling northbound on U.S. 23 near milepost 9 when they drove off the right side of the roadway around 6:15 p.m. The vehicle hit several construction barrels before striking a bridge pillar of the County Road 56 overpass, according to police.

Troopers say the impact caused the car to become fully engulfed in flames, trapping the driver inside.

The driver died. Their identity is being withheld pending positive identification by the Wyandot County Coroner’s Office.

The northbound lanes of U. S. 23 and the county Road 56 overpass remain closed at this time while the bridge structure is inspected by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The Bucyrus Post was assisted at the scene by the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, Pitt Township Fire and

EMS, Upper Sandusky Fire and EMS, Wyandot County Coroner’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Ed’s Towing.
