HOCKING COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Transportation is reminding drivers of an important rule when it comes to seeing road crews: slow down and move over.
Authorities say on Friday afternoon, ODOT crews were working on a berm project at U.S. 33 near S.R. 595. Two crew members were in the back of the truck picking up traffic cones when they saw a van hitting cones.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the workers jumped out of the back of the truck before the van slammed into it.
Those two workers, the ODOT truck driver and the driver of the van were all injured.
On Saturday, ODOT tweeted a photo of one crew member, Brian, who had jumped from the bed of the truck to avoid the van.
"ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks visited him in the hospital this morning. Slow down & move over for our crews so they can go home safe every day!" the agency tweeted.
Matt Bruning with ODOT told 10TV one other crew member had already been treated and released on Friday.
“Take heed of the signs that you see on the roadway,” said Sgt. Aaron Hayes with OSHP. “They’re not just posted there to block the scenery. They’re to warn you.”
