MONROE, Mich. — A Michigan man was killed Thursday night in Whiteford Township after he stopped his vehicle on U.S. 23 and drove in reverse.

33-year-old Lance Pittman Jr. from Ypsilanti was traveling northbound just before 7 p.m. and came to a stop on the shoulder for unknown reasons, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office following a preliminary investigation.

After a moment, he put his 2008 Hyundai Tiburon in reverse, going southbound on the northbound shoulder.

Pittman entered the right lane of traffic and was struck from behind by a 2010 Ford Expedition driven by a 52-year-old Adrian man. The driver of the Ford was unable to stop and was taken to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Pittman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both drivers were wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. It is unknown if excessive speed, alcohol, or other substances played a role in the incident.
