SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — A 50-year-old man and a 7-year-old child are dead following a car crash in Sandusky County.

Mark Whaley, 50, from Bellevue, was driving eastbound on US 20 in the right lane with his grandson as a passenger while Mark Wagner was driving a semi-trailer eastbound on the same lane.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Whaley stopped for a red light at the intersection but Wagner was unable to stop and struck Whaley's car in the rear.

Troopers say there was a lot of heavy rain in the area at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles ran off the south side of US 20 and struck a large utility pole and fence before coming to final rest.

Whaley and his grandson died on the scene;  Wagner suffered minor injuries.

The crash is still under investigation but alcohol or drugs do not seem to have played a factor.
