Broadway Street to close for long periods of time this week

The only time one lane in either direction will be open temporarily will be during the morning-rush hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Starting Tuesday, Broadway Street, one of the major outlets, into downtown Toledo will be shut off for long periods of time this week.

The only time one lane in either direction will be open temporarily will be during the morning-rush hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

This part of town has been plagued by closures due to the greater I-75 reconstruction project through downtown Toledo. However, despite all these closures, some businesses remain optimistic.

Owner of Green Lantern on Broadway, Maurice Habbouche, is hoping that road construction workers may actually generate more business.

"Sometimes, they've got to do what they've got to do, they're going to close it, they're going to close it. What can you do? Hopefully we'll get benefits out of people working on the bridge," he said.

The beams to reconstruct the bridge over Broadway Street need to be set and the only way to do so safely is to put the crane on Broadway, which will allow the job to be completed by Sunday.

Then next week, setting beams on I-75 is going to mean rolling road blocks and stopping traffic.

"They're going to slowly come up I-75, and at that point, it will be reduced to one lane, and then we've got about five to ten minute closures for each beam where we have to close I-75," Public Information Officer and spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Transportation, Rebecca Dangelo said. "We'll have law enforcement out there helping us, and that's just because they have to pick that beam up and again, (and) we don't want traffic next to that should anything happen."

Most streets through that south Toledo area are not wide enough to sustain the weight of the heavy equipment and the massive beams. So, during that time next week, ODOT said they plan on setting three beams per day.

In the meantime, your best way to avoid Broadway Street is to take the Anthony Wayne Trail, which is also covered by orange barrels.
